Scientific Notation Converter — Decimal ↔ Scientific
Convert numbers between decimal, scientific, E-notation and engineering notation. Client-side.
Enter a valid number.
How to use
- 1 Type any number — in plain decimal or in scientific/E-notation.
- 2 See it in scientific, E-notation, engineering and standard decimal forms.
- 3 Negative and very small/large numbers are handled.
Why use this tool
- Convert between decimal, scientific, E-notation and engineering notation.
- Works both ways — paste 4.5e-4 or 0.00045.
- Runs entirely in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
What is scientific notation?
A way to write numbers as a mantissa between 1 and 10 times a power of ten, e.g. 4.5 × 10⁻⁴ for 0.00045.
What is engineering notation?
Like scientific notation but the exponent is always a multiple of 3, which lines up with SI prefixes (kilo, milli, micro…).
What is E-notation?
The calculator/computer form of scientific notation, e.g. 4.5e-4 means 4.5 × 10⁻⁴.
Can I convert back to a plain decimal?
Yes — enter a value in scientific or E-notation and the standard decimal form is shown.
What is Scientific Notation Converter?
A scientific notation converter rewrites a number between standard decimal form and scientific notation (a × 10ⁿ), E-notation, and engineering notation.
Features
Decimal ↔ scientific
Convert a plain number to m × 10ⁿ form and expand it back to decimal.
Engineering notation
Also expresses the value with an exponent that is a multiple of three.

Common use cases
-
1
Very large / small numbers
Express astronomical or atomic-scale values compactly.
-
2
Science & engineering
Switch between scientific and engineering notation for reports.
-
3
Read exponent output
Decode a number shown in e-notation from code or a calculator.
Zerethon's scientific notation converter turns ordinary decimal numbers into scientific notation (a mantissa times a power of ten) and back, in your browser. It also shows engineering notation, where the exponent is a multiple of three. Everything runs client-side — nothing is uploaded.
