Frequently asked questions

Which is the right encode mode?

Minimal is what you actually need for embedding text in HTML — it just escapes < > & " and '. Non-ASCII is for environments that strip high bytes. All-known-named is mostly for typography demos.

Why do some characters use &#x and others use names?

When the named format is selected the tool emits a name if one exists; otherwise it falls back to decimal or hex according to your format choice.

What about XML?

For XML escaping use our Escape / Unescape tool — XML only defines < > & " ' as predefined entities.
