Frequently asked questions

What's the average reading speed?

Adults read silently at ~238 words per minute (Brysbaert 2019 meta-analysis). Speaking pace is much slower — ~150 wpm for presentations, 110–130 wpm for podcast narration.

How are paragraphs counted?

A paragraph is any block of text separated by one or more blank lines. Single line breaks don't start a new paragraph.

Does it work for languages other than English?

Counts (words, characters, sentences) work for most Latin-script languages plus diacritics. Word counting for languages without spaces (Chinese, Japanese, Thai) treats each character as a word — not ideal, but a future tool can address that.
